23:30 — Contemplation of Ethical Self-Discipline within the Meditative State
30:45 — Instructions for Practice
Ethical self-discipline arises from the wish to stop causing harm to ourself, others and our environment. It gives rise to composure and creates conditions for turbulence in the heart-mind to settle. The mind becomes increasingly calm and clear.
In the space of a calm, clear mind, we have the opportunity to investigate the intentions behind our actions.
The intention behind any actions is what gives rise to the flavour of its result. Quite simply, if we act with malice or selfishness, it gives rise to a heavy or dark result. Whereas, if we act with an intention to benefit our future self, others or our environment, without greed or malice, it gives rise to a bright and light result.
The results of our actions — whether dark or bright — are what we experience as and in our heart-mind. A bright mind is composed, relaxed, sees clearly and is ready to benefit others.
ETHICAL SELF-DISCIPLINE PRACTICE
I pay attention to the impulses behind what I say and do. I consider how my words and actions will harm or help in this situation. I undertake actions that create peace for myself and others.
The focus for Days 31-40 of the 100 Days of Care is the ‘far-reaching’ attitude of Ethical Self-Discipline (Sila Parami). These instructions for practice were given at Stream Yoga + Meditation on October 23, 2024. This recording includes the guided meditation prior to the talk, but does not include the discussion and Q&A that followed.
